New song Half Made is out in the universe today, along with a new emerging project known as The Denizen Hum which will be evolving over the coming months
It feels perhaps a little overdue, as the process to get to this point has been an exercise in the art of letting go… A practice that requires repeated practice. Now comes the moving on & through to the next.
This song first emerged in its early form a few years back under a very different set of circumstances, relationships and life situation.
While this song and video has a lot of personal meaning & potent symbols for me, I try not to dictate or attach too much of my personal translation to it, as I prefer to be surprised by what new meanings & feelings it brings to light for others. But my hope for it is that it connects with who it’s meant to connect with and that the hard-won experiences and journey that birthed the song, with all its imperfections, brings to you what it’s meant to.
As the idiom goes, It takes a village, & I am enormously grateful for the extremely talented & special people who have been brave enough to participate and contribute to the birthing of this piece. Strings attached, or not, I hope you know who you are and that I love you very much.
Special thanks to Danny Reisch , for the phenomenal mix & co-production, my dear cousin Jacob for some bowel troubling synths, Lismore Mastering for the icing on the cake, Terrorbird Media and Neil McSweeney for the continued support ,and Bradley at Hudson Records for his patience as I constantly shit the half-made bed and moved the release date back, and wrestled with whether the title needed a hyphen or not. (Any ideas?) We got to this new beginning in the end.
This video has been a labour of love and experimentation in partnership with Em – The song & I were both dead lucky to be the subject as she translates her undeniable photography skills into the world of videography. I think she pulled it off.
As we were working on a shoestring, we figured we should find the longest shoestring we could, utilise our phone lights and make some art with it…
Em proceeded to do just that, weaving extraordinary intricate webs in various locations for me to tangle myself in, creating the space for me to move with the emotion of the music, and sit with all that gets lodged in this gangly human form from lived experience. The past ghosts, projected shadows, the push & pull of attachment, the craving for connection the longing of loss, the bargaining with grief, the clamour for control and the hope of a breakthrough to release… it was quite the workout. (Maybe even an exorcism!)
Intense, vulnerable and brooding as the piece is, there was also a lot of fun behind the scenes (and a few poked eyes) courtesy of our lovely pal Amy who got the enviable task of handling my clammy face. She even agreed to wear black for the first time, just for us.
I hope the art we made here resonates with you and brings to you what it needs to, please share if it does
With thanks to all who indulged our webby weirdness, Amy, Portland Works Studio, Sheffield, and for all who take the time to watch!
