“Soap in a Bathtub” was my first ever music video. A collaboration with my mate Helene Michaelides (now of @cuckoofilms ) At the dawn of YouTube, before our phones even had useable cameras (and I was barely old enough to shave…..)
Armed with an old bathtub, a foam/bubble machine and some halloween costumes, the idea was simple; We would “teleport” via the bathtub to various locations around Sheffield. (Bonus points to anyone who can name them all) It was the middle of February and freezing.
Some say it’s easier to ask forgiveness than permission, but it turns out most folk didn’t take too kindly to a half-naked scruffball showing up unannounced with soap in a bathtub, on their turf, we managed to get kicked out of every location before we’d fulfilled our full vision for each scene, but we got enough to give you the gist.
The shot in the concrete playground in particular only lasted a minute before we perked the interest of a local gang of youths who took the rare opportunity to play a game of rugby with a bloke in a bathtub instead of a ball. I came away with only a few scrapes, but unfortunately the bathtub was shot to pieces.
Our fortunes took a turn however when we stumbled across a mime troupe practicing their craft in the botanical gardens.. As you do.
